What is the most hated chore in your household? In ours, it’s the washing of vessels. Akshayapaatram goes literal when you’re the one doing the dishes.
Unless you are a dishwasher of the electrical kind. Right?
I need your help. People with dishwashers, could you please speak up? Tell me if you love your dishwasher and think it’s indispensable? Or, it’s simply not worth it since you got to rinse everything first anyway? I’ve heard such opposing views (especially with respect to Indian cooking) that I don’t know what to believe. Name-dropping of brands also welcome.
Thank you, thank you. You have no idea how grateful I am for your feedback. (Just take my word for it.)
I would like to be honest and I simply wanted to say ..I hate “all” the household chores…from cooking to folding clothes and doing them “daily”…oh boy…but I am doing it…. and will be doing it,i guess…
Dishwasher …? hmm…
what i don’t like…
1. the rinsing part – agreed.Especially when you simply want to be out of the kitchen and be done with it…
2. Cannot put pressure cooker or any thing that is made of aluminium inside the dishwasher…those should be handwashed .all my pans are made of hindalium ..so you can imagine…
3. if the dishes are sticky and oily…just rinsing won’t be enough..should be well cleaned..that again to me means handwashed….
4.Initially was using heated-dry ,then the environment-friendly me realized that it is not good for the environment..so now i am use the non-heated dry..but it doesn’t dry that well…
what i like…
1. I can at least simply load the dishes inside when I am in need of the sink (immediately)…
I think it serves the purpose but not for Indian style cooking…,i guess…
Thank you for taking the time to write in detail!
When you started what I like with 1, I thought more would follow! My suspicion is confirmed.
Folding clothes- how could I forget! Another irritation-inducing chore. Just when everything’s done and put away & you barely sigh in relief..it’s a new day, with its baggage of things-to-do!
I can write a Ph.D thesis on this or at least an angst-filled tome of anguish – but will write a summary instead
NO DISHWASHER
Why ?
1) Unsuitable for Indian cooking
2) More prep/setup/cleanup work as compared to womanual washing
3) More effort in drying dishes
4) Massive levels of negative vibes over the daily “who can load dishes optimally” debate
Workaround – gently train the better half into becoming the dishwasher
PV, does the workaround actually work in your household?
This whole business started because the husband did the dishes for 2 days. Two days! And only ’cause the flu put me (the regular dishwasher) out of action. Otherwise he cleverly ensures that the job is very badly done.
More prep than womanual washing? Uh oh. Point to watch out for.
Thank you for the summary. Though I’d much rather prefer to read your thesis.
Workaround – For Utopia
Real Life – Gnash your teeth and wash the @$#$#@$# dishes
I LOVE MY DISHWASHER. I love ANY dishwasher. The trick to the pre-wash is to soak the really oil & spotty dishes in water with some dishwasher liquid or dishwasher powder for about 10- 15 minutes. This is important – don’t use regular dish soap when you’re soaking it – use dishwasher soap to soak it. The difference is tremendous.
Most modern dishwashers are built to clean pretty dirty dishes & you don’t have to pre-wash. But pre-soaking does help.
I buy the most expensive dishwasher tablets but buy the cheapest dishwasher liquid soap/powder to do the soaking.
Hope that helps.
Broom!! Hi!! Loong, long time!
Wow, thanks for the tips. Exactly what I needed to know. Because
the husband marched right ahead and bought us a dishwasher. It is being installed now as I type.
So thanks again.
PV- Yup. Gnashing teeth happened. Every single day. Looks like the new dishwasher’s gonna take over.
(Or not.)
Good luck !
Thanks!
A dishwasher is immensely useful. My sis who lives in the US swears by it too. the joke is that someday she will sit inside the dishwasher for a quick shower herself!!!! LOL! Im sure you will form your own equation with your dishwasher very soon. we ll wait for that post.
)
Thanks for the thumbs up, Boo!
Using it for a shower is a great idea! You get a steam bath, you get lathered, washed and dried! What more could one ask for.
This reminded me of an episode of Scrubs where a washing machine serves a very unusual purpose (have you watched it?).
I don’t think I could manage without my dishwasher. And I totally agree with Broom’s suggestion as that is exactly what I do too. Pre-soak dirty dishes for a while and then rinse and load into dishwasher. I wash the pressure cooker and mixer by hand but I don’t think it is a deal breaker.
Thanks, ILL! Now that we’ve been using it for a few days, I couldn’t agree with you more. Plus, that’s extra 30 minutes for me to not do anything!
I HATE folding clothes. I want a clothes folder.
Ah, yes. I hate it too. No respite, though. Warning: Have a baby and watch freshly-laundered clothes bunnies waiting to be folded.
When i was a kid, I told my mom that my dream would be to own a magic cupboard where you dump dirty clothes at the bottom, after which they would be sorted, washed, dried, ironed and neatly hung up or folded according to need. Hopefully technology will make that a reality!
Now here’s a visionary! Though it does sound like an assembly-line industrial machine
We’ll leave it to the Japanese to miniaturize it, eh?
WANT POST. WANT POST. WANT POST. WANT POST.
Abi- Didn’t you know? I’m on a thinking/writing break. Except I am too lazy to even write that up.
Happy new year to you and Vijesh!
We just got a dishwasher at my house and its brilliant. Indian style cooking everyday. We just give the plates and tumblers one quick rinse as we put them for wash, and then dump them into the machine. Quick rinse means using a half tumbler of water and running it over the plate. My mom just dumps the rest of the vessels in the night.
Hi Saranya, welcome and thanks for stopping by!
We do the same quick-rinse step before loading them on. It’s been a few months now, and apart from the convenience I still don’t fancy it much. The washed vessels have a whitish coating that disappears only when hand-scrubbed. Do you have similar problems? For the time being, I’m turning a blind eye to that!
I started commenting and then saw that this post was written last year! Why have you stopped?!! I just thought to myself – wow – nice to have found such an interesting blog and turns out you don’t write any more?!
You probably will not even see this comment. In any case, don’t get me started on dishwasher! I am so sick of the issues we have with our dishwasher. We don’t want to buy a new one until we move and the one here is so old and so lousy. What I do with buying organic veggies and washing vegetables well and what not, the damned dishwasher makes up with leaving filmy residue on dishes which I am sick of washing off with my hand.
Hi Noon, welcome! Thanks for the compliment, it was just the thing to get back to thinking about the blog again! I can’t seem to follow any of my thoughts into readable posts, that’s why I haven’t published anything recently.
The dishwasher, it’s growin’ on me. Would still prefer to hand-wash under ideal conditions, but that includes being up-and-about and a willingness to not crib! Since I’m none of that, I’m going with pretending to be happy about the way it does its job.
